The title of the website comes from a book published in February 1973 by Professor Paolo Maffei: a famous Italian astronomer and a teacher at the University of Perugia, who discovered two galaxies that bring his name (Maffei I & Maffei II). I am still obli-ged to him for his contribution, at the time, to spark my interest and curiosity to the world of astronomy. After thirty years from the first edition of the book, my Beyond The Moon Web site is a homage to Paolo Maffei, and following the same path of his book, it is a journey among the wonders of the Universe. This Web site was created also to convey my feelings of a trip among the ima-ges which express a passion, for astronomical photography: a passion I have always followed with perseverance and dedi-cation.

Il titolo della Home Page è preso dall'omonimo libro, pubblicato nel febbraio 1973, del Prof. Paolo Maffei (famoso astronomo Ita-liano scopritore di due galassie che portano il suo nome: Maffei I e Maffei II, docente presso l'Università di Perugia), verso il quale sono tutt'ora riconoscente per aver contribuito, all'epoca, ad accrescere l'interesse e le mie curiosità verso l'Astronomia. A trent'anni dalla prima edizione del libro, Al di là della Luna desidera essere un omaggio all'autore e, in simbiosi con il libro stesso, un viaggio fra le meraviglie dell'Universo. As a metter of fact, it is just through the section Tabulae Coeli, the heart of the website, that I whish to express my the personal vision of this trip in which the constellations and the majority of the most significant astrono-mical objects contained in them, are reviewed by zooming into narrower and narrower fields of view. The long exposure shots published in this Web site are part of a vast collection of photographs gathered in the course of these years, all taken by chemical emulsion (before the affirmation of the new digital supports), and for most of them, by searching for the ideal loca-tion on high mountains, where the sky was still transparent and without artificial light pollution.

Since spring 2005 the images with higher resolution contained in the Tabulae Coeli, have been taken also by a ccd camera. Actually my ambition is to transmit to anyone who runs through these pages the same emotion felt by all the enthusiasts and non enthusiasts when, casting a glance to the clear sky, they are dismayed. So it is an invitation to run through these pages and to be aware of the wonders that exist beyond the moon, now hidden in greater and greater measure by the continuous spreading of bright radiation, before our sky is taken off to us for ever.

At last, I wish to underline, the distinctive aspect of the Web site: a conti-nuous and constant evolutions due to the undertaken commitment.

Difatti è proprio attraverso la sezione delle Tabulae Coeli, il cuore del sito web, che si desidera esprimere la visone personale di questo viaggio in cui vengono passate in rassegna le costellazioni e buona parte dei più significativi oggetti astronomici in esse contenuti con un cam-bio delle inquadrature, sempre più ristrette. Le lunghe esposizioni riportate in questo contesto fanno parte di una vasta collezione di fotografie raccolte nel corso di questi anni, tutte eseguite con l'impiego dell'emulsione chimica (prima dell'affermazione dei nuovi supporti digitali) e, per la maggior parte di esse, andando a ricercare in alta montagna le postazioni ideali, dove il cielo fosse ancora trasparente e privo d'illuminazione artificiale.

Dalla primavera del 2005 le immagini con più alta risoluzione contenute nel-le Tabulae Coeli sono realizzate anche con l'ausilio di un sensore ccd. In ef-fetti l'ambizioso scopo che mi prefiggo è di trasmettere un'emozione a chi-unque scorra queste pagine, simile a quella che provano tutti gli appassio-nati e non, quando, volgendo lo sguardo in direzione del cielo terso, riman-gono esterrefatti. Un invito dunque a navigare fra queste pagine e a pren-dere coscienza delle meraviglie che esistono al di là della Luna, nascoste ormai in misura sempre maggiore dal continuo diffondersi dell'irraggiamen-to luminoso, prima ancora che il nostro cielo ci venga tolto per sempre.

In ultimo desidero sottolineare l'aspetto caratteriale del sito: una continua e costante evoluzione legata all'impegno intrapreso.
