Abruzzo Astronomical Observatory - 2026.01.24 – Observations conducted with the large Cooke refractor began in 1893 and were primarily devoted to the planet Mars and the so-called ‘Martian canals,’ whose discovery in 1877 by Giovanni Virginio Schiaparelli had sparked significant debate within the astronomical community. Based on his observations, Cerulli concluded that the supposed canals were nothing more than optical illusions created by the observer, resulting from a misleading integration performed by Schiaparelli himself, who connected dark spots at the limit of visibility; this interpretation was later confirmed by Schiaparelli. During this period, observations were also carried out on Venus, as well as on asteroids, comets, and double stars
